It Happens to the Kind

(Sequel to “Blood” by Zdravka Evtimova)

“Calm down!” I said, but what good does it do? The mob continued to scream. People are being toppled over. I couldn’t do anything. I tried to keep the door to the shop closed so that no one can come in, but I wasn’t strong enough. Everything was happening so fast. The man who asked for my blood tried to leave the shop to tend to his wife, but someone had taken the bottle he had from him. I tried yelling again, I told everyone to stop. I couldn’t hold the door open any longer. The people were too strong. Finally, I gave in. People grabbed onto me as if they haven’t eaten in days. Multiple people stabbed my body, hoping for a drop of my blood. People fell on top of me while doing so. Time started to slow down, the world has turned black. All of a sudden, everything became white. I was blinded by how bright it was. I felt drowsy and nauseous but also lighter in a sense. I looked down at myself and not a single cut was on my body. As if everything that happened before was a dream. “Hello!” I said. Nothing. “Hello. Anyone?” Again, no one answered. I got up and started to walk. I kept walking until I found someone who could help me. Anyone who could explain what has happened to me. Hours have gone by, and it seems as though I haven’t walked at all. My surroundings were still white almost as if I was in this neverending white room. Out of nowhere, I heard a sound like the keys to piano. Whoever was playing was only playing the scale. Over and over and over again.  I started to run faster and faster towards the sound. I couldn’t let it get away! In the far distance, I saw a hole. It’s a dark circle and when I got to it, the sound of music is came from inside it. I jumped in without any second thoughts because I was so desperate to find someone at this point, just like the mob outside my shop who were so desperate to keep their loved ones alive. I landed onto a fluffy pillow. When I looked up, I saw none other than this beautiful pale girl resembling a porcelain  playing the piano. Her facial features are soft, and her hair is curled so neatly. She was so poised and her vibe was confident and sweet. I, for one, have always been different from what everyone wants. I have dark circles under my eyes and a bony body structure. I was a klutz, and people didn’t appreciate my awkwardness. Without my realization, the girl has stopped playing the piano but the same notes continued to play. She held out her hand for me to grab onto and get up. I did.

“You are just like me aren’t you? You are an undecided too!” she exclaimed.

“What? Undecided about what? Where are we? Do you know how to go back to where I’m from?” I asked.

“You mean you don’t know? We are in Limbo. The in between Afterlife and real life. We are one of the few whose fates haven’t been decided yet. Those of us in here have been killed through acts of kindness. All I know is that I saved my sister from being hit by a truck when she crossed the street suddenly. If we are lucky, we may return back to our bodies on Earth. Otherwise, we go to the Afterlife.”

“Can I choose where I go? Is there anyway to-” I said as my body began to disappear. “What is happening? Help me!”

“Oh dear! Your deciding time went by quickly. If they chose for you to go back to Earth, remember acts of kindness should happen through the truth. People will begin to assume you have powers or are doing something. Remember when you first came here, and you thought I was playing the piano? Make sure your actions, don’t hurt your life.”

“Aough!” I said as I jolt up from the bed. Confused, I looked around the room for some answers, and all I saw is the back of a woman with neatly curled hair. As she turned around, I noticed her facial features are soft and she gives off a sweet, confident vibe. She smiled.
